  • 04 June 2012. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. .L/R; Ella Rose Huck (9 yrs), Quinn Russell (9 yrs) and Talia Altman (9 yrs) join local citizens gathered to show their support for a 7 day newspaper in the city following the recent shock announcement that the Times Picayune, having survived 175 years and Hurricane Katrina is to be decimated by Advance Publications Inc, a Newhouse family company. Staff were shocked when the New York Times broke the story. The paper, with the highest readership rate in the USA is to have print days cut to just 3 days a week, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday starting this autumn. Despite the newspapers' relative success, (it is still in the black) having undergone swathes of recent cuts, Advance Publications Inc has decided to make further cuts and roll out an expanded digital version of the newspaper via its enhanced web presence at NOLA.com. Advance Publications has stripped print runs from Alabama newspapers and continues to look to slash print runs throughout its empire. This will be the first major US city to not have a daily newspaper..Photo; Charlie Varley.

  • 09December 05. New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina Aftermath. <br />
3 1/2 months after the storm, New Orleans continues to bury the victims. 77 year old widow Geneva is embraced by her grandson at the funeral of her husband Vincent Giuffre at Greenwood cemetery. 87 year old Guiffre died in the arms of his 77 yr old wife Geneva in New Orleans East as the flood waters swirled around their kitchen. Geneva placed her cat Patsy in her attic, fully expecting her beloved pet to die. She swam out of her back door, leaving her husband's body floating in the kitchen. She held onto the drain surrounding her house roof and made her way to the front of the building where she clung on to the drainpipe for 3 days. Geneva was rescued by helicopter, taken to Houston. Her frantic family did not learn that she was safe for 4 days. The only thing she was able to save from her house was her wedding ring. Geneva and Vincent had been married 56 years. Miraculously a neighbour saved her cat, discovering it alive 3 weeks after the storm hit. Geneva and her cat now live with her son Gary in Atlanta.<br />

Second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Grand children Chyana Hurst (4 yrs (l)) and Tyriq Burton (3 yrs) await cutting of a memorial cake inside Robert Lynn Green Sr's FEMA trailer at 1826 Tennessee Street in the Lower 9th Ward. His house was destroyed by the deluge when the levee breached just blocks from the steps. Robert lost his mother and another grand daughter at the house when they perished in the terrible flooding. He lost hold of his grand daughter in the swirling floods. She was drowned. His mother was not found for 4 months when her skeleton was discovered in what remained of his washed away house. Jason hopes to rebuild. Many residents are struggling to return to the still derelict and decimated Lower 9th Ward.<br />
