• 21st, December 2005. New Orleans, Louisiana. Jackie Russell stands outside her devastated home at 2416 Desire Street in the 9th Ward long after the devastating flood from Hurrican Katrina subsided. Jackie just wants to return home and had until this point been emotionally unable to deal with gutting the house she grew up in. Her hope is to be able to repair her house and bring her elderly mother back home before she dies. Jackie was only able to save a few precious china items, the rest of her house and all her belongings had to be thrown in the street.

 • 15 September 2012. Braithwaite, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, USA. .Lenny Bazile stands in his decimated, now gutted home home on Bazile Drive. The road was named after Mr Bazile's father. He was born and raised in the area and has now rebuilt following 4 hurricanes. Piles of household debris is stacked curb side as residents return to their homes which were inundated with flood waters from hurricane Isaac. Many residents who had rebuilt following Hurricane Katrina must now start again following Isaac. Some have already moved away for good, never to return..Photo; Charlie Varley.

Many people tried and failed in their bids to return after falling victim to unscrupulous contractors, insurance companies paying cents on the dollar and a number of other factors that drained their finances and prevented them form finishing their dream homes in their old neighborhoods.
• 29 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Lakeview. The one year anniversary of hurricane Katrina. Demolition man Jay Johnson of east Orleans stands in the rubble of what used to be an upscale upper middle class home he has just torn down. Johnson picked through the rubble for the copper piping to recycle. He was on speakerphone to the lead contractor who was moaning about his labor force and problems with crews, his 'boss' having just returned from yet another first class jet set holiday with all the cash he is now earning.

Chris Kopp collects all he can from his sister Sara Fullagar's smashed home in the Arabi neighbourhood. Chris' brother in law had painted a large target on the outside of the house which now rests in the middle of the street with the Louisiana words 'Get'er done,' a reference to the bulldozers to go ahead and destroy what remains of the house.
• 20 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Lower 9th ward. Jerome Benjamin (with weed-eater) and Louis Banks (mower) work to reign in the weeds at an abandoned Lower 9th ward property with flood grime thick on the windows, thick on everything that belongs to an elderly lady the men know as 'Grandma.' Everyone knew 'Grandma,' they say. Her real grandson was supposed to come by and get the gutted home ready for sale. He never showed up. The neighbourhood is deserted. It is hard to imagine anyone living here ever again.

Eye on the storm. Robert Green, survivor of Hurricane Katrina and resident of the Lower 9th Ward sits outside his Brad Pitt inspired 'Make It Right' foundation home watching the first feeder bands of Hurricane Isaac come ashore. He and his family are not evacuating. Mr Green lost his mother and young granddaughter during Hurricane Katrina. Both drowned and he and his surviving family members weathered the storm for 7 hours on the roof of their wrecked house. The 7th year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is tomorrow and with a storm lurking in the Gulf Mr Green admits to having chills as he remembers the tragedy of 7 years ago.
