  • 04 June 2012. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. .L/R; Ella Rose Huck (9 yrs), Quinn Russell (9 yrs) and Talia Altman (9 yrs) join local citizens gathered to show their support for a 7 day newspaper in the city following the recent shock announcement that the Times Picayune, having survived 175 years and Hurricane Katrina is to be decimated by Advance Publications Inc, a Newhouse family company. Staff were shocked when the New York Times broke the story. The paper, with the highest readership rate in the USA is to have print days cut to just 3 days a week, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday starting this autumn. Despite the newspapers' relative success, (it is still in the black) having undergone swathes of recent cuts, Advance Publications Inc has decided to make further cuts and roll out an expanded digital version of the newspaper via its enhanced web presence at NOLA.com. Advance Publications has stripped print runs from Alabama newspapers and continues to look to slash print runs throughout its empire. This will be the first major US city to not have a daily newspaper..Photo; Charlie Varley.

Abandoned Six Flags amusement park in New Orleans East.<br />
Not amusing any more. 'Closed for storm.' Six Flags.<br />
On site security guards protect the premises 24 hours a day from numerous sightseers wishing to visit the abandoned former amusement park. The park radiates an eerie post apocalyptic sense of foreboding in it's dereliction. The park was destroyed by hurricane Katrina in August 2005, stripped by copper thieves and is slowly being reclaimed by the land it stands on. The site is now home to thriving wildlife. Would be developers for the former Jazzland site have proposed various ideas over the years to revive the area into a theme park and shopping complex, proposals which have been rejected by the Industrial Development Board. <br />

P&J Oyster House, a New Orleans institution has closed its door after 143 years in business. Incomes have crashed as all seafood prices have risen over 30% in the past 4 weeks alone as stocks run low thanks to closed fishing grounds affected by oil pollution. BP's disastrous environmental catastrophe out in the Gulf of Mexico threatens the livelihood of many thousands of workers affiliated to the fishing industry in Louisiana. Earnings are down as much as 50% of those pre BP's oil disaster. Thousands of barrels of oil per day continues to leak into the Gulf because of the explosion and collapse of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform 46 miles out to sea. The closure of fishing grounds both east and west of the Mississippi river outflow is crippling thousands of local fishermen and all affiliated businesses and families who rely on the seafood industry. it is feared that many more will lose their jobs and everything they own as a result of BP's Gulf Coast environmental disaster.<br />

Geneva placed her cat Patsy in her attic, fully expecting her beloved pet to die. She swam out of her back door, leaving her husband's body floating in the kitchen. She held onto the drain surrounding her house roof and made her way to the front of the building where she clung on to the drainpipe for 3 days. Geneva was rescued by helicopter, taken to Houston. Her frantic family did not learn that she was safe for 4 days. The only thing she was able to save from her house was her wedding ring. Geneva and Vincent had been married 56 years. Miraculously a neighbour saved her cat, discovering it alive 3 weeks after the storm hit. Geneva and her cat now live with her son Gary in Atlanta.

Geneva and her cat now live with her son Gary in Atlanta.<br />

  • 29 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Lower 9th ward. On the one year anniversary of hurricane Katrina, and most of the area remains derelict and abandoned. Resident Terry Charles moved back into his flood ravaged home months ago and lives in his mould filled home from which he was lucky to escape when the hurricane hit. Terry suffers from severe mental problems, yet somehow manages to live alone with no neighbours or community. He has not eaten for days. He holds a net he made, in which he 'catches things.' The net contained a flood damaged rusty cigarette lighter and various bits of junk. There are no social services to help Terry. He can quote passages from the bible and scratches bizarre drawings on bits of paper he finds. Terry needs help desperately, but none is available to him. He does not know it is the one year anniversary today.
