Second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Deserted, empty houses remain derelict and decimated in the Lower 9th Ward. The area remains mostly abandoned and overgrown, ghostly reminders of lives that once were. President Bush came to town and claimed he could be proud of what local and federal government have achieved in the city. Yet two years after the storm, it is quite clear that local and federal government are failing and have a great deal to do to live up their promises.
His house was destroyed by the deluge when the levee breached just blocks from the steps. Robert lost his mother and another grand daughter at the house when they perished in the terrible flooding. He lost hold of his grand daughter in the swirling floods. She was drowned. His mother was not found for 4 months when her skeleton was discovered in what remained of his washed away house. One year later and people gather at the site of the breach of the industrial canal for the Great Flood commemoration and memorial ceremony to 'honor and remember our loved ones who have passed.' People came to mark the anniversary of devastating hurricane Katrina at the site where the now repaired and allegedly in theory stronger levee flood wall. The levee breached along the industrial canal at the point where people gathered, needlessly killing hundreds of innocent civilians in the worst engineering disaster in US history.
• 24 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Lower 9th ward. Australian tourists and hurricane Katrina survivors Bud Hopes (33yrs - Brisbane) and Michelle Van Grinsven (22yrs- Sydney) return to the city almost a year after they were caught up in hurricane Katrina. Bud and Michelle were amongst the tourists evacuated to the Superdome during the storm. Bud emerged as the 'leader' of the tourist group of some 70 foreign tourists caught up in the hell that was the Superdome in the days after the storm last year. The two are shocked to discover the lack of action amidst the debris of the still ruined Lower 9th Ward.

Hurricane Katrina 9 years later. Many derelict, falling down buildings dot the landscape as the area continues to struggle with recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The universal code spray painted outside the front door by search and rescue teams remains as it was almost 9 years ago. The building was searched by NOPD with 0 victims discovered inside.
Katrina 8 years later. In a tale of two cities, the hardest hit neighbourhoods struggle to revitalize and return. Brad Pitt's 'Make it Right Foundation' enjoys limited success with ecologically sustainable housing rebuilds in a handful of city blocks. A few residents have also rebuilt their properties. Yet many half finished or blighted properties and vacant overgrown lots remain dotted throughout the landscape with limited new construction projects. Residents who have returned complain of limited services, infrequent police patrols, high crime rates, rampant mosquitos and uncontrolled vermin.
